Theodore Polos - Band of Horses

Theodore C. Polos, (1901-1976), was a painter, printmaker and educator, was born in Mytilene, Greece. In 1916 Polos immigrated to the United States, settling in Boston first before moving to San Francisco in 1922. He studied art at the San Francisco Institute of Art, and at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland with Xavier Martinez.
Polos sporadically worked with the San Francisco Federal Art Project in the late 1930s. A scholarship enabled him to travel to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Mexico and study.
Polos later taught at the Academy of Advertising Art, The California College of Art and Crafts, and the California School of Fine Arts. He was a member of San Francisco Art Association.
Polos showed his works at prestigious venues of the day including at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Carnegie Institute Invitationals.
This work is an oil and gouache on paper. It measures 15.5 x 20 inches sight size, and 23.25 x 27.25 x 2 inches overall.
The condition is good. It is signed by the artist, lower right.
