Impressionist winter or spring scene, titled ‘Late Afternoon’ by George Gardner Symons.
George Gardner. Symons, (1861-1930), was born in Chicago, and began his training as an artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Symons later traveled to St. Ives art colony, in Cornwall, England, where he learned the practice of painting en plein air, which became Symon’s preferred method of painting.
Symons traveled extensively, and kept studios in many locations, including Laguna Beach California, and Colrain, Massachusetts.
This work was likely painted en plein air, near Colrain, Mass, in the springtime.
The work is titled verso, ‘Late Afternoon’ and dates from the early 1900s.
Oil on stretched canvas, measuring 17.5 x 21.5 inches sight size, and 23.75 x 27.75 x 2.5 inches overall.
Excellent condition. Frame is of the period, and shows some minor wear consistent with age.
Signed lower right.
