This watercolor painting depicts some of the destruction that occurred in Ham, Somme, in Northern France during WWI. The scene depicted is painted on a paper postcard by an artist working for the Comite des Etudiants Americains de l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts Paris (Committee of American students at the Ecole des Beaux Arts), a war relief organization established to support art students who were serving at the front as well as their families at home.
This committee raised funds by organizing the production, exhibition, and sale of art-postcards created by professional artists, as well as by students.
These postcard paintings often depicted war scenes and war ruins, and were usually signed by the artist and often included a date and a description of the subject.
The backs of the postcards are marked with a printed inscription “The Comité des Étudiants Américains de l’École des Beaux-Arts Paris guarantee the authenticity of this post card”.
This postcard painting is signed by the artist, ‘J. Lapeyre’. (possibly Jules Laypyre), a French photographer and painter).
