Gaston Lachaise - Standing female figure
Standing nude pencil drawing by French born artist Gaston Lachaise.
Lachaise was a native of Paris, France best known for his robust depictions of female nudes.
While still a student in Paris, studying the European approach to the female form, he met and fell in love with Isabel Dutaud Nagle, an older American woman who was visiting Paris. When Nagle returned to The United States, Lachaise followed. In the US Lachaise became profoundly impressed by the great vitality and promise the US held at the time. This experience helped him set his artistic vision. Lachaise began to portray the female nude in a new and powerful manner which was highly distinctive and markedly differ from the slender depictions in favor at the time.
His approach was wildly popular, especially among the wealthy American elite. Lachaise carved a place for himself in the modern art world.
This work is a quintessential work by the artist.
