From a label verso:
‘Born in Nashville in 1878 people also live for many years in Springfield, Texas and in Asheville, North Carolina while she studied at the art Institute of Chicago, her life was not the urban art world that was Wolfe Malo. For this reason she was perhaps less affected by the mainstream Art movements of her lifetime instead, she focused on immediate observations, the portraits that resulted have all the subtle coloristic representation of the Steele life.
These works were given to Cheekwood by the family of Clara Webb peoples who expressed the wish shortly before her death in 1956 that they be displayed where the people who live in the area where she was born and spent most of her life could enjoy them. This is the first time that they have been exhibited to the public’.
